This season at Spijkers en Spijkers we were presented with ‘La Femme Paysage’ a collection inspired by the painting, ‘Femme en corset – Conquête de passage’ by 19th century artist, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. This influence was noted most strongly in silk dresses and skirts screen printed with a fine line painting of a lady, among a wash of pastel colours and illustrations. There were stunning one off pieces which I felt were the stand out looks in the collection and the majority of the collection consisted of impactive geometric print silk dresses in bold primary colours styled with gold chains hanging from the hair or down to the front of the dresses. The lengths were respectable and below the knee – a look which Riet and Truus Spijkers clearly feel most drawn to.
The feminine dressy looks were occasionally broken up by a more androgynous style – model’s with cropped ’20s style hair wearing slick evening suits in royal blue and lovely silk shirts with bow detailing. My favourite looks in the collection, alongside the Lautrec inspired prints had to be the blue tailored suit (pictured below) and I liked the introduction of sheer lace and rubber detailing. The LBD's with lace detailing across the chest where a treat and the sexy see-through lacey tops/dresses/skirts with bright, colourful shapes concealing the more revealing parts of the body were just devine. It was evident that this was a more daring but nice progression from the more classic styles by the Dutch-duo – giving a more youthful, racy appeal to the label.
